What Age is Best to Fix a Deviated Septum?
A deviated septum can occur as a result of an injury or be due to changes during puberty as your facial features become more defined. In many cases, the condition may not need correcting but for others, a deviated septum can negatively affect your day-to-day life. If breathing problems are lowering your quality of life, it might be a good time to consider fixing your deviated septum.
Dr. Bryan Correa is a board-certified surgeon who routinely performs both functional septoplasty and aesthetic rhinoplasties. He works with patients of all ages to treat problem deviated septums before they cause further problems down the line.
Deviated Septum Correction Surgery in Adolescence
The debate for the best age to fix a deviated septum is highly debated among doctors and patients alike. Although correction can be done at a young age in extreme circumstances, typically, a septoplasty isn’t typically recommended until adolescence (at least 16 for girls and 17 or 18 for boys).
Some signs you may want to see a doctor include;
- Breathing through the nose is difficult
- frequent sinus infections
- Nosebleeds occur due to dry nasal passages
- trouble sleeping through the night
Dr. Bryan Correa will speak with you about your concerns and determine your child’s candidacy for the procedure.

What Happens During Septoplasty?
Septoplasty (deviated septum correction surgery) is a minimally-invasive procedure that’s done on an outpatient basis. Dr. Correa uses the latest surgical techniques to minimize trauma and prevent post-operative complications. Anesthesia will be used to keep the patient comfortable throughout.
During the procedure a small incision is made within the nostrils so no visible scarring is necessary. Dr. Correa will then meticulously work to trim and straighten the septum. The entire surgery can take as little as 1-2 hours to complete. In some cases, a rhinoplasty may be done at the same time to change the shape of the nose.
Septoplasty After an Injury
Functional septoplasties after a trauma to the nose can safely be done for both adolescents and adults. There is no upper age limit to the procedure. Dr. Correa recommends treating these types of injuries as soon as possible to prevent complications. If you have trouble breathing out of one side or both nostrils, it might be a good idea to consider speaking with a skilled surgeon.
