What Causes Crooked Noses?
If your nose doesn’t follow a straight vertical line down the center of your face, you may have a deviation of the septum. Some people are born with this deviation, while others develop one following an injury. Deviated septums may cause nosebleeds, breathing problems, sleep disturbances, or all of these.
In addition to genetics and injuries, crooked noses can be the result of tumors or severe infections. Depending on the cause, the degree of crookedness may be subtle or very dramatic and take on a C-, I-, or S-shape.
What is Septoplasty?
A functional rhinoplasty, also known as a septoplasty, corrects an obstructed airway. Septoplasty helps straighten your nose by reshaping the wall between your nasal passages. This procedure can address nasal airway blockages caused by trauma or genetics. It can also correct a previous rhinoplasty procedure.
Patients with obstructed breathing may suffer from:
- Chronic sinus infections
- Vertigo
- Loud breathing and snoring during sleep
- Sinus pressure and headaches
- Dry mouth
- Postnasal drip
Equally as culpable as a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates (turbinate hypertrophy) and internal or external valve collapse may be alternative structural causes of restricted breathing. Functional rhinoplasty can be performed at the same time as an aesthetic rhinoplasty, which will enhance the outward appearance of your nose.
A Complex Procedure with an Artist’s Touch
Repairing a crooked nose may be a more complex procedure than other types of rhinoplasty. It requires special expertise and artistry on the part of the surgeon. The operation may be made more challenging by the following:
- Deviated cartilage and bone have a tendency to drift back towards its pre-operative position.
- Crooked noses frequently occur on asymmetrical faces, making it difficult to establish a true midline.
- In cases where a crooked nose is the result of a trauma, nasal bones may have shifted and healed into a crooked position.
